Cowboys riding Romo-Momentum

IRVING - Romomania. Romo-Momentum.

Whatever you call it, it is in full effect now.

And there’s nothing that Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, who two days ago called talk of quarterback Tony Romo possibly making the Pro Bowl after four starts ludricous, can do about it.

Nor should he want to after Romo tossed a team-record five touchdown passes in leading the Cowboys to a 38-10 victory against the Tampa Bay Bucanneers.

“I have to be pretty pleased with that,” a smiling Parcells said. “I’m going to bring the players in for a little while and give them Saturday, Sunday and Monday off. That’s a first for me.”

Romo threw two touchdowns each to receiver Terry Glenn (30 and 2 yards) and running back Marion Barber (1 and 2 yards) and one to receiver Terrell Owens (7 yards).

“I haven’t arrived by any means,” Romo said. “There’s still room for improvement. I don’t know what credit I deserve. I just pick out a guy that I think is open and give him the ball. They do all the work.”

It was ninth time in team history that a Cowboys quarterback has tossed five touchdowns in a game and the first since since Troy Aikman did it against the Washington Redskins in 1999.

Considering it was in front a Thanksgiving Day crowd of 63,183 at Texas Stadium and national television audience, its safe to say that Romomania has generated a few more converts.

And although Parcells loathes a celebrity quarterback, he can’t help but like the wave the Cowboys have been riding since he benched veteran Drew Bledsoe and inserted Romo at quarterback five weeks ago.

Romo completed 22 of 29 passes for 306 yards against the Buccaneers. He has seemingly gotten better with each start and so have the Cowboys.

“His executive is good,” Parcells of Romo. “I’m impressed that he didn’t turn the ball over and he managed the game well.”

The Cowboys, who are not only back in the thick of the NFC playoff chase but are now legitimate Super Bowl contenders, are 4-1 with Romo at the helm. They are riding a three-game winning streak for the first time since the middle of last season.

Only one team (the 9-1 Chicago Bears) in the NFC has a better record than the Cowboys (7-4). And they have 10 days off until the Dec. 3 showdown at the New York Giants (6-3) for first place in the NFC East.

“We know where the competition is. You don’t have to tell me,” Parcells said. “I’m looking forward to the next one (game). I think we’re going to be in it for a little while.”
