Norm re Acquisition of Romo by Cowboys

Recap by Sago1 from a sports forum:

Justed listened to Norm Hitzges interview of Jerry Jones on 11/24/06.

Hitzges asked Jones if info he had was correct that Cowboys were able to sign Romo despite fact that other NFL teams offered him more money cause of Romo's desire to work with Sean Payton. Jones said Cowboys and Peyton were very excited about getting Romo to sign with us because he very succesfull 1AA player and was the national offensive player of the year for the 1AA and there no reason at all why he couldn't be successful in the NFL. Jones went on to say that Cowboys usually set aside certain amount of money to give to undrafted free agents to sign them and Sean Peyton was very excited about getting him. Parcells did caution Jones not to overspend too much. FYI: Remember Sean Peyton graduated from same school as Romo and was himself a great QB there where he set many records which Romo broke. But also Peyton had a reputation for developing QBs.

Hitzges also asked Jones about fact that Romo was only signed thru 07 season and were Cowboys even thinking about new contract. Jones jumped in and said we don't discuss contracts and Hitzges said he took that to mean we are considering making changes to Romo's contract. Jones just laughed but denied anything.

Frankly, I'm inclined to think the best thing Peyton might have done for us was to lock in the signing of Romo. And also don't forget when Peyton took over as H/C of the Saints he tried to trade for Romo but Parcells wouldn't allow it. It was after that I believe the Saints signed Brees. Also read/heard somewhere that Peyton wanted Tony to become the Cowboys starter back in in 05 presumably before Cowboys went ahead and signed Bledsoe (don't have any idea Peyton's view of that signing).

I'm also thinking and already posted this earlier in my analysis of Romo's development that Peyton paid a large role in it. It also seems like Cowboys current coach (don't know his title) Palmer knows how to take advantage of Romo's talents and is designing plays around his capabilities. I think this will expand but takes times cause Parcells did say about week or so ago that they work in practice on some of those things for Romo but that he screws them up in the game.
