Aikman, Thomas Land on College Hall Ballot

By John E. Hoover, Tulsa World, Okla.
Mar. 8--Former Henryetta resident and University of Oklahoma quarterback Troy Aikman is among a handful of area football personalities on the 2007 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, announced Wednesday.

Also on the ballot are former Oklahoma State All-American Thurman Thomas, ex-Sooners Tom Brahaney and Clendon Thomas and former University of Tulsa coach John Cooper.

Aikman was a Sooner backup in 1984, then played less than half a season in 1985 before sustaining a broken leg and transferring to UCLA, where was a consensus All-American in 1988. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the '88 draft and went on to help lead the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl titles.

Thurman Thomas was All-American at OSU in 1985 and '87. He helped direct the Buffalo Bills to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances and was named the NFL's MVP in 1991. Both he and Aikman were recently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Brahaney was All-America at Oklahoma in '71-72, Clendon Thomas in '57.

Cooper coached at TU from 1977-84 (the Golden Hurricane was 57-31), and also coached at Arizona State ('85-87) and Ohio State ('88-2000), compiling a 193-83-6 record, nine conference titles and 14 bowl appearances.

This year's ballot also includes former Heisman Trophy winners Tim Brown, Doug Flutie and Gino Torretta. A total of 75 players and eight coaches (including former OU offensive coordinator Jim Donnan,

who later coached at Georgia) are on the initial ballot. The '07 class will be announced on May 9.
