Wade Phillips Press Conference @ 1:30 PM
RECAP by Gryphon, Clove, TheSports78, theogt from the CowboyZone:
1) Spencer did some good things, but has some technique things he can work on, but Wade was pleased with his natural ability. Spencer did the same things he did on film out here today. We need to expose him to some additional techniques. We have a teaching system. We start with the hand on the ground and go through to progression. We will show him some things this afternoon.
2) Early impressions of TO- Doesn't want to address TO the entire press conference.
Terrell is going to practice to clear that up. He can catch the ball prett well as a matter a fact. He caught balls in Miami earlier in the week. He talked to his doctor and we're playing it by ear. He caught everything today, but he's not completely healed. He played with a hurt finger last year. He's got some toughness about him, but we're not going to put him in a situation to rupture it. I told him it was a good start and we got a long way to go. Technically we made a lot of mistakes, but it was a good start. It's baby-steps right now. We'll finish it up this afternoon. He's one of my good players just like others. He's important to Wade as a team.
Was Terrell a pleasant surprise? We weren't sure how far along he'd be. We were hoping he'd be ready. He knew the routes. He's been here and studied. We're not far behind as far as knowing things, but we're all going to make a few mistakes.
Players commented about your intensity. We're going to work hard. Just cause I'm laid back doesn't mean we're not going to work hard. Hard work and good times go together but hard work comes first.
3) Romo had a good [morning] day today, knew the timing, has worked hard knows where the indivual routes are, has quick feet, quicker than most, he was pleased with his practice and so was Romo. The offseason program obviously helped him with timing and knowing where everyone will be on the routes. He's got a knack for -- he's got really quick feet. He can get back quick and make the decisions. He was pleased with this practice and I was too. Romo is a former holder here.
4) Expections for Ellis- Playing it by ear, keeping up with the doctors information, he'll probably try to practice this after noon, we're pleased with where he is, possibly training camp. Where do you see him fitting in? - He's our starting outside backer, we saw what happened when he wasn't here, he can be one of those dominant players, we'll have to see when he gets back.
5) Carpenter [has] been working outside, and he and Burnett can really run.
Bradie and Akins are vets and know what to do, he likes all 4 of them guys. The main reason Carpenter is working outside is b/c of Ellis' absence...i think once Ellis starts to work his way back in, Carp will move inside most of the time
6) Marcus [Ware] was pretty good today, he made several he didn't make during the season and had a good pass rush. You have to identify what they can do like Ware can rush the passer, so that's what he'll do.
7) Some coaches coach the scheme instead of the players.
8) Plans for Roy Williams -Try to get our best players in position to make plays, that's what he's always done.
9) If you get pressure on passer, will that solve coverage issues from last year. Sure, the more pressure you get the better the secondary will be. It all goes together, if you cover well, it helps to get to the qb, and vice versa.
10) What have you seen from J.Jones-He likes him, he's been productive, he should continue to be. Looks like he's in good shape, been working out in Arizona, good screen runner/draw runner, stretch outside runner that can cut, we're going to get him in those situations.
11)How much confidence in Garrett? I have a whole lot of confidence in him. He's set up the whole offense and put together the whole playbook. He's taught all of the coaches. They've been working together. The players respond to him. He knows exactly what he wants done and that gives me confidence.
12)Open competition at kicker? Everything's an open competition. Draft picks have to beat out starters.
13) Voluntary stuff? I encourage staying here. This camp is mandatory but other stuff isn't. I just like the guys being around each other. Hanging out together. I want them to be a team. Rather than talking on the cell.
14) Ever had this kinda turnout?
This here? YOu kidding? There's a lot of you here. It's different but its positive. IF there's that much interest it motivates the players. People expect them to do well. That helps them. It's a positive situation for a football team for people to want and expect them to do well.
15) Are you having to coach your coaches? Since February we've been doing that. They know how I want things done. I'll go to meetings and say we need this or that done better. I'll tell them this drill needs to be done better. We're new together, but we're melding well.
16) Anyone come in out of shape? For this time of year, there are goin gto be guys that are a little heavier. We approach those things. It's the same with every team. We don't have anybody that's slobby.
