Cowboys Blog: Novacek sharing knowledge with Witten

I landed an exclusive interview with Pro Bowl TE Jason Witten, which is real easy to do when every other media member is huddled around Tony Romo's locker.

Witten and I had a good chat about Romo cementing his status as a leader for the Cowboys with the way he handled the Seattle Slip. I'll have a full post on that by the time you wake up tomorrow morning.

Witten also mentioned how much of a help Jay Novacek has been. They've developed a friendship, and Novacek is fired up about former teammate Jason Garrett running the offense.

Garrett's passing game is in large part pulled from the offense he played in/watched with the '90s Cowboys. Novacek, of course, was Troy Aikman's security blanket in the scheme. He's given Witten a lot of tips on things like intracacies of the tight end's route in certain plays.

Novacek likes to talk about how Witten has so much more talent than he did. Witten isn't hearing it.

"He set the standard in the '90s," said Witten, who soaks up every little lesson Novacek gives him.

Witten promised to pay homage to his mentor by hurdling at least one defensive back this season.
