DMN Blog: What Wade said

What Wade said

Some highlights from Wade Phillips' final press conference of the minicamp:

-- "Wow, I forgot what this Texas weather was like. It's not La Jolla [Calif.], I can tell you that." Phillips mentioned that he discovered the Cowboys as a whole were in good shape, especially for this point of the off-season.

-- When asked which players fighting for roster spots impressed him, Phillips said the minicamps weren't about evaluating players. That's the purpose of training camp and preseason games. "You're not making the team here. What you're learning is what to do and how to do it. ... I was happy about the competitiveness. I had to pull them off some."

-- "Tony [Romo] was out there today and said, 'Where would you rather be than here?' A lot of them said, 'Somewhere other than here.' But Tony likes to compete every day."

-- Phillips downplayed the lack of depth at nose tackle, saying that Jay Ratliff and Stephen Bowen worked some at the position. He said they could probably play some nose tackle if the Cowboys use a lot of stunts.

-- Phillips said he's not trying to do anything specific differently than in his other head coaching stops. A stubborn reporter pressed him on this, and Phillips replied with a smart-aleck response. "I drink Dr Pepper in every press conference," he said, pointing to the can and pleasing a sponsor. He made sure to mention that his record in Buffalo was 29-19, indicating that he didn't do a bad job with the Bills.
