Matt DeWalt: Dallas is more than T.O.

San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds finally, and somewhat mercifully, passed Hank Aaron earlier this week with his 756th career home run.
Most people outside of San Francisco, excluding those Giants fans scattered throughout the country, have been waiting for this story and this chase to end since it began.
Now that the historic chase is over, and football season has officially begun with the start of preseason play, there are plenty of other issues to talk about. Especially for fans of the Dallas Cowboys, who opened preseason play with a 23-10 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts at Texas Stadium in Irving Thursday night.
However, while there is plenty for Cowboys fans to talk about at the water cooler, one particular topic keeps coming up and I am having a hard time understanding why.
Terrell Owens, for better or worse, is once again the center of attention in Dallas. But I think there are plenty of other stories to be told and many more players to profile.
We ran a short article in Thursday’s edition of the Democrat about Owens and his final day at the Alamodome and his preparation for the preseason opener with Indianapolis. I chose to run the article because there is never too much football and anything pertaining to the Cowboys is of interest to many readers in Parker County.
After reading the article and putting it on the sports page, I thought to myself, ‘Why do I care about T.O. and his preparations?’ The truth is, I don’t.
I would much rather read about Tony Romo and what he does now that he is starting the season in complete control of the offense. There is no quarterback controversy because lets face it, Brad Johnson should in no way be able to keep up with the younger, and I would say, more talented Romo.
I would have rather heard about Julius Jones and what he is going to do to stay healthy and take his game to the next level. How will he and Marion Barber attack defenses this season?
If we are going to read about a receiver, how about anybody other than Owens or Terry Glenn. To be honest, health issues have already, and may continue to be, a hindrance to these players, their performances on the field and Dallas as a team. Where is Patrick Crayton or Sam Hurd. Tight ends catch the ball, too and the Cowboys have a great one in Jason Witten.
Of course if you wanted to change scenes completely and go to the other side of the ball, there are numerous stories there as well. For the past four seasons, former Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells has been stockpiling defensive players and that defense is now expected to be one of the best in the NFC East and the NFL.
The whole point to all of this is we know about Owens. We know what he can do on the football field, and unfortunately, off. Even during the season, because of the position he plays, we are going to hear and read plenty about and from Owens. He is a Pro Bowl receiver, most seasons, he is one of the top players of the year at his position and depending on the mood and the week, he can and does make a difference in any game on any Sunday.
In this time of change and new beginnings in Dallas, we should read stories about new head coach Wade Phillips, Cinderella quarterback Romo, younger, up-and-coming receivers, or anybody on the defense.
Lets read about the players and facets of this football team we don’t know.
