Simplifying things for Spencer
First-round pick Anthony Spencer said after preseason opener that the toughest part of his transition from DE to OLB is playing the run when he has pass-coverage responsibilities. He'd still be trying to read the tight end by the time a blocker got to him.
Greg Ellis, who made the same position switch last year and has served as a mentor to Spencer despite other drama, said that situation was also the toughest part of his transition. He said he's still trying to figure it out, but his best advice to Spencer would be to play the run first and bail out fast when he recognizes it's a pass.
But Wade Phillips makes that read sound pretty simple.
"It's pretty easy if you just jam that tight end every play," Phillips said. "He’ll tell you if he’s going out for a pass or not."
