DMN: Broncos Invade Valley Ranch II

The Broncos and Cowboys go again at 4:30, and you can expect one hour of live-blogging magic from me.

Self-Promotions Alert: Gotta leave a half hour early so I can appear on Southwest Kia Sportstalk (Ch. 52) around 6:30 p.m. The tremendous beat tandem of Todd Archer and Calvin "Lucky" Watkins has promised to let me know if any must-blog stuff happens in the last half hour.

Speaking of Archer, we'll get started with some of his observations of the Cowboys' defense from the morning practice. I'll focus on the Dallas D this afternoon after primarily watching Tony Romo and Co. this morning. Follow the jump and start refreshing like crazy at 4:30.

UPDATED AT 5:30!!!

3:56 -- DE Marcus Spears made two impressive plays during team drills. He blew up a running play in the backfield and had a QB pressure that forced an incompletion. ... DeMarcus Ware had an especially impressive move against Broncos OT Adam Meadows during pass-rush drills. Ware set Meadows up like he was speed rushing and made a strong rip move inside. ... Backup NT candidate Remi Ayodele got poked in the eye during pass-rush drills, but he got back in there later. ... Remi's big bro, Akin, had a nice deflection of a Jay Cutler pass intended for RB Cecil Sapp. ... DE Jay Ratliff, who might be the Cowboys' best pass-rushing lineman, batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage. ... Broncos RB Travis Henry had a couple of nice runs, but Archer reports that the Cowboys' 1s got the better of the Broncos' starters. Of course, it helps that Denver isn't allowed to cut-block out here. ... Broncos RBs are required to run 30 yards on every practice carry.

4:07 -- Some interesting info for those whining about how soft Wade Phillips' first Cowboys training camp has been: the Rocky Mountain News' Jeff Legwold informs us that Mike Shanahan has his players in full pads once per training camp. Shorts and shoulder pads are the norm for the Broncos. Pretty sure Shanahan's two Super Bowl championship teams were tough enough.

4:31 -- Celebrities attending practice include Pat Summerall and Lee Roy Jordan. Roger Staubach was here this morning. ... Isaiah Stanback is wearing a T-shirt, shorts and a visor and walking with Greg Ellis on the sideline. Stanback might just be sitting out as a precaution, much like Wade Phillips doesn't let Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo practice twice a day. Will let you know if I get more info about Stanback.

4:45 -- Just got done stretching and now doing position drills. Will give practice updates once competitive stuff gets going. ... Don't hold your breath waiting for Cowboys to get Gerard Warren to be Jason Ferguson's backup. The Broncos are the second team to find out the hard way that Warren can't play despite being a high draft pick. Wade Phillips has said Jay Ratliff can handle backup duties at nose tackle if they let him run a bunch of stunts.

4:54 -- Wireless card is having all kinds of problems with this heat. Updates will be few and far between, since I have to go inside to get online. Will have full practice report this evening. ... Cowboys vs. Broncos stuff still hasn't started in this practice.

5:16 -- The highlights of the Cowboys D vs. Broncos O was 5-9 geezer Aaron Glenn's leaping interception. He outjumped 6-3 Javon Walker on a post route from Patrick Ramsey. ... On the not-so-bright side, Glenn was toasted on a fly route by South Garland's Quincy Morgan, who had a cup of coffee with the Cowboys once upon a time. ... Rookie OLB Anthony Spencer did a nice job of getting out to the tight end in the flat after biting on a play-fake to the other side. Spencer would have made the tackle for a short gain. ... Anthony Henry did a good job covering a hook-and-go by Brian Clark, who torched Henry on a post route in the morning. Jay Cutler threw the ball over the middle to TE Nate Jackson, who would have been unloaded on by Roy Williams. ... Some guy named Glenn Martinez burned Nate Jones on a double-move. Martinez beat Jones by several yards despite being held coming out of his second cut. Jones could very well lose his roster spot to Joey Thomas. ... Cutler completed a deep out to Jackson vs. Akin Ayodele, but DeMarcus Ware would have had a sack on the play. ... Denver OG Mark Fenton stopped Bobby Carpenter in his tracks on a blitz.

5:23 -- Only saw a few plays of Cowboys O vs. Broncos D, since I focused on the other field. ... Brad Johnson completed a couple deep outs, one to Patrick Crayton and the other to Jerheme Urban, who made a leaping grab. ... Denver DB Karl Paymah made a good break to deflect a deep ball from Tony Romo to T.O.

5:30 -- They were working on punt coverage/returns when I left. ... Read some comments. Tough crowd. I'll make excuses later for not living up to the sky-high standards set in the Alamodome. Gotta go.
