Scouting ... Dolphins de Jason Taylor

A liberal dose
September 12, 2007

Miami Dolphins speedy defensive end Jason Taylor is not slowing down.

Taylor, in his 11th season, had 13.5 sacks last season and was selected The Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year. It was the third-highest sack total of his career, and he added 10 forced fumbles, eight passes defended and two interceptions.

Taylor's durability defies his age (33). Miami's all-time sack leader has started 115 consecutive games dating to 1999, and he has recorded the most sacks (90.5) by any player since 2000.

At 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds, Taylor plays with speed, range and athleticism to outwork offensive tackles. He will match up with Cowboys left tackle Flozell Adams on Sunday.

Strengths

Height, reach and quickness off the edge, and durability. Uses his long arms to keep blockers away and has speed to catch running backs. Athletic enough to be utilized in pass coverage.

Weaknesses

Lacks mass and struggles against bigger, stronger and athletic offensive tackles.

How to stop

Hope you have a Pro Bowler at tackle. Taylor can dominate average players with the ability to speed-rush the pocket.

Last week

Had five tackles, a sack and forced fumble in 16-13 loss at Washington.

Fantasy value

High. In a league that plays defensive players, Taylor has a ton of value because of his chances for sacks, fumble recoveries and interceptions.

Notable

Taylor's five fumble returns for touchdowns is tied with Atlanta's Jessie Tuggle for the most in NFL history.... Third-round draft choice out of Akron in 1997.... Five-time Pro Bowler, including three consecutive from 2004-2006.... Home-schooled during high school.... Heavily involved in charities and community events.
