T.O. Says: Just Wait Until Glenn Returns
IRVING, Texas - What a difference a year makes for Terrell Owens, the Cowboys wide receiver who seemed to stir things up last year whenever he spoke at his locker out here at The Ranch.
Well this year, Owens' Wednesday morning sessions with the media seem to be far less controversial, be that because the 12th-year NFL receiver is more cautious about what he says or the media has been less inclined to nitpick every word or to ask leading questions in hopes of getting a volatile answer.
Still, no matter what, whenever Owens speaks, people listen, and here is a sampling of what the NFC's second-leader in receiving yards (329) had to say as the 3-0 Cowboys were getting ready to meet the 0-3 St. Louis Rams at noon (CDT) Sunday at Texas Stadium.
Do you think any defense can stop this offense?
Owens: Any given Sunday, it just depends on how prepared we are and on how mentally sharp our mindset is going into the game. We know that we have to keep ourselves in check and know that we have to come out and know that everybody is gunning for us. We played on Sunday night and everybody got to see the type of football that we can play and the type of team that we have.
Do you worry about the Cowboys overlooking the 0-3 Rams?
Owens: We're not going to overlook anybody. We know they've got a pretty good defense. They've played very, very solid. We've just got to come out and play sound football. We've just got to worry about what we need to do and everything will take care of itself.
But this can be a trap game, especially being 3-0 after beating the Bears?
Owens: Every Sunday, any team can get beat. We're not going to take this game any different than we did last week's game. It's a very important game for us. For us to get where we want to be, we need to win this game.
Have you paused to reflect on where you were last year at this time (one-year anniversary of being rushed to the hospital for a bad reaction to painkillers following his hand surgery)?
Owens: No, I think I've done all the pausing and reflecting over the course of the off-season. This year, I'm really just focused on what I need to do and just trying to do whatever I can to help this team get where it needs to be. We're going to take it one game at a time. We're not going to overlook anybody. We're not going to overestimate or underestimate anybody.
Is Tony Romo a better quarterback than you thought before you got here?
Owens: I never really knew much about him prior to coming here. The more I'm around the kid, it is special. The sky is the limit for him. He's a guy that doesn't lack confidence. When you're out there, you can see it on the field.
Did you think this offense could be this successful without the threat of Terry Glenn on the other side?
Owens: Like I said, I played in an offense where we had a two-headed monster where it was me and Jerry (Rice), and you had J.J. (Stokes), and then Jerry left and it felt like I was the No. 1 guy sort of. The same thing last year with me and Terry, but I'm able to shoulder the load. I'm able to be that feature receiver, so it's almost like me being a center and the offense has to go through me. That may not be the way, but that's how I felt. It enables me to go out and play at a high level.
So how much better can the offense be when Glenn gets back?
Owens: Oh, man, it will be better. You add what we have now, that's just an extra ingredient to this offense. It makes it even sweeter.
Have you talked to Glenn about that?
Owens: He knows. When he's in there getting treatment and we go out for walk-through, he tells me, 'Dude I see you out there getting your work on.' I told him just wait 'til you get back. Get back healthy and we're going to take it and be a two-headed monster.
