Brown magic Blog: Cowboys putting them away
The Dallas Cowboys have learned to put games away in the second half! In fact the Cowboys have outscored there opponents 111-40 in the second half. An amazing stat which has led the Cowboys to win four in a row, and by an average of 20 points a game. Much of the Cowboys success is due to an explosive offense under first year offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. Garrett has found ways to get all his stars involved in the game. Tony Romo is boasting a 112.9 QB rating, Jason Witten is off to his best start in his 5 year career, and T.O. flat out makes plays all over the field. The running game is no slouch either. The combination of Jones and Barber has proven too much for Cowboy opponents so far. Marion Barber, or "Marion the Barbarion" if you listen to T.O., has picked up right where he left off last season finding the endzone 4 times with an average of 6.4 yards per carry. The offensive line has been amazing, allowing Romo all day to hit his targets and opening up giant holes for Jones and Barber. And still, some question if Dallas has yet to peak. The Cowboys have been without their #2 reciever Terry Glenn since preseason due to several surgeries during the months of July and August. If Glenn can come back in the next few weeks, it will only mean more havoc for opposing defenses.
Besides the signing of right guard Leonard Davis this is basically the same offense of last year. The differance is Jason Garrett. The one time Aikman backup has shown he learned a few things standing on the sidelines all those years. Garrett made it a point since his signing to get Owens the ball. Even lining Owens up in the backfield during the Bears game to avoid double coverage. It's not just moving Owens around that has made this offense so prolific, once the Cowboys have managed to gain the lead on their opponents they step on the gas even more. So many Cowboy fans were frustrated with the offenses play under former head coach Bill Parcells. Under Parcells it seemed as soon as the Cowboys got the lead they were content with simply running every down, playing ball control. That might be the reason why so many teams were able to come back on the Cowboys late in games. Garrets offense thus far has been the opposite, attacking defenses in the air late in games. As long as this offensive line keeps wearing down defenses and giving Romo plenty of time to hit his recievers, Garretts offense should continue to dismantle opposing defenses.
