Romo's a bigger, better Flutie
AP
Wade Phillips answered all kinds of questions about Doug Flutie today. Makes sense, since Phillips benching Flutie still gets Bills fans all fired up.
Phillips didn't want to get into the reasons behind the benching. He was willing to reminisce about how "neat" Flutie was in Buffalo.
"When he came in, it just pumped up the whole area," Phillips said. "It reminds me of Romo as far as the fans and everybody getting excited about a player, a quarterback."
Romo reminds me of Flutie in a lot of ways -- the moxie, the elusiveness, the ability to create when things break down and make plays that might not be pretty but are effective. Phillips said the QBs are different players but acknowledged those similarities.
Phillips didn't elaborate on the differences, but they're pretty obvious. Romo is at least five inches taller and can pick secondaries apart from the pocket. He has all the things that made the itty-bitty Flutie a successful NFL quarterback, plus the traditional skills GMs look for in quarterbacks.
Add it all up, and it looks like a $70 million package.
