Jones: Cowboys won't play internationally (NFL Notes)

PHILADELPHIA -- Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will use his team's bye week to travel to London, where the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins will play the NFL's first regular-season game held overseas. That might be the NFL's future, but Jones doesn't see the Cowboys being a part of a regular-season international game anytime soon.

"I don't think it's for the Cowboys," Jones said Tuesday from the NFL owners meetings in Philadelphia. "We're excited about the fact that when we go to Buffalo, there's a great group of Cowboys fans and creating that interest there. It's really not for us. There are plenty of teams that will volunteer for that."

Next season will be the Cowboys' last in Texas Stadium before they move to their new $1 billion stadium in Arlington. It makes sense that if the Cowboys are ever going to voluntarily give up a home game to play internationally, 2008 would be the season. But Jones said there is no chance of that happening.

"Because it is our last year [in Texas Stadium], it would be my focus to give our fans everything we can in the form of regular-season games and preseason games," Jones said. "We wouldn't want to do those kinds of things [next year], and we wouldn't want to be a part of that as we get into the new stadium."

The Cowboys have played nine exhibition games outside the country -- four in Mexico, one in Toronto, two in London and two in Tokyo. Jones said the Cowboys would be willing to play an international preseason game as a visiting team.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday he hopes to schedule two overseas regular-season games next year.

The Chiefs are willing to give up a home game to play in Germany next season, Chiefs president and general manager Carl Peterson said. The Bills presented a proposal to owners Tuesday to play a regular-season game in Toronto every year for the next five seasons, beginning in 2008, as well as preseason games in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

"We're going step by step," Goodell said. "But the reaction we're getting [in London] is extraordinary."

In 2005, the 49ers and Cardinals played a regular-season game in Mexico City that drew more than 103,000. It was the first regular-season game played outside the U.S.

Dallas Chargers?

The Chargers might have to move Sunday's home game against the Texans because of wildfires burning in San Diego County. Roger Goodell said several sites are being considered if the game has to be moved. One of those is Texas Stadium, since the Cowboys have a bye.

Los Angeles, Phoenix and Houston are other possibilities, Goodell said.

The most likely destination is Monday night in Phoenix, where the Chargers are spending the week practicing. The Cardinals also have a bye this week, and University of Phoenix Stadium is scheduled to host a motorcycle show Friday through Sunday.

The Chargers had to move a home game to Tempe, Ariz., four years ago because of wildfires. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Saints were forced to move a home game against the Giants to Giants Stadium.

"We'd love to have the Chargers play at Reliant Stadium," Texans owner Bob McNair said. "I think we could sell out in three days, but from a competitive standpoint, I'm not sure the Chargers would want to do that. We're just waiting to see."

Draft changes

The NFL announced revisions to the draft, which will be held April 26-27. It will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, three hours later than this year. Teams will get 10 minutes to make selections in the first round, instead of 15, and seven minutes in the second round, instead of 10.

Only two rounds will be held the first day, instead of three, with rounds 3-7 taking place Sunday. Each selection in rounds 3-7 is allocated five minutes.

Briefly

NFL owners are considering changes to the Pro Bowl, including playing it the week before the Super Bowl to "bring more focus" to the all-star game, Roger Goodell said.

Goodell reiterated that Tank Johnson would not have his eight-game suspension reduced. Although he can practice with the Cowboys, the defensive tackle isn't eligible to play until Nov. 11 against the Giants.
