Team report rundown: NFC East only

Sporting News correspondents

Each week, Sporting News correspondents provide insight and analysis on every NFL team. Here's a sample of what you'll find in the latest NFC team reports.

East Division

Dallas Cowboys

Special teams are a big part of the team's best record since 1995. Now 6-1, it is getting huge plays from its kick and punt units. Defensive end Chris Canty blocked a field-goal attempt in Game 7 and safety Pat Watkins returned it 68 yards for a touchdown, the first time since 1983 the team had returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown.

New York Giants

The Giants acquired Reuben Droughns in the offseason to be Brandon Jacobs' backup and provide a 1-2 punch at running back. Droughns, though, got off to a slow start, was moved to fullback because of injuries and then was supplanted by Derrick Ward as Jacobs' understudy. Droughns became a goal-line back. He responded by barreling his way into the end zone.

Philadelphia Eagles

As the season starts to spiral downward, the team will look at more young players. Second-round draft pick DE Victor Abiamiri got his first playing time of the season last week, in place of free-agent bust Montae Reagor, and held up all right.

Washington Redskins

Sean Taylor is becoming a force for the defense. Taylor always has been forceful in the sense of the hits he can make. Sometimes, he was too caught up in that, and the result was missed tackles or missteps that led to opponents' big plays. >This season, the staff re-designed the defense, leaving Taylor deep at free safety with the idea that relieving him of run support in the box would free him up to make more plays in the passing game.
