Cowboys Notes

A liberal dose
December 08, 2007

Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman didn't back off his comments made on Sirius Satellite radio this week about going after Detroit quarterback Jon Kitna.

But Friday he said the comments were in fun and not designed to be taken quite so literally.

'I was really making more a joke out of it,' Newman said. 'I think I've blitzed maybe four times this year. It's not, 'Oh, I'm going to take his head off.' I was trying to be funny.'

The NFL didn't think it was too funny, as it sent a letter to him to warn him about such comments.

Garrett not contacted

Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said he has not been contacted by any college football program looking to interview him for a head coaching job.

There have been reports and rumors as far west as UCLA and as far north as Michigan that Garrett is on a list of candidates.

'I haven't been contacted by anybody,' Garrett said. 'My focus is the Cowboys and this job. I've got the greatest job in the world.'

Phillips honored

Wade Phillips is the NFL's coach of the week.

The Cowboys beat Green Bay 37-27 on Nov. 29 to improve their record to 11-1, the best start in franchise history.

Phillips was selected from among three finalists by voters on NFL.com. The other finalists were Carolina's John Fox and San Diego's Norv Turner.
