COULD JONES FIRE WADE TO KEEP GARRETT?

Our buddy Todd Wright of Sporting News radio raised the possibility during our Tuesday night visit with him: Would Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fire head coach Wade Phillips in order to keep offensive coordinator Jason Garrett?

It's an issue that Jones will need to confront, given that Garrett is on the wish list for the two teams that already have vacancies. When Garrett was hired by the 'Boys a year ago, it was widely presumed that, if all went well, he'd eventually have a shot at taking over the top job.

But it's gone too well, and his shot might come from somewhere else. Unless Jones steps in.

There's another alternative to dumping Phillips now. Jones could work out a Gregg Williams-type deal with Garrett, pursuant to which Garrett would receive a seven-figure payment if he's not the successor to Phillips.

Either way, look for Jones to do what he has to do to keep Garrett in the fold.
