DMN Blog: Mayock explains McFadden vs. Mendenhall

by Tim MacMahon

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock surprised a lot of people by declaring Illiinois' Rashard Mendenhall the best back in the draft.

Mayock, however, isn't just trying to be controversial by ranking Arkansas' Darren McFadden second. He backs up his opinion with highlights in a convincing manner right here.

You can't just dismiss Mayock's take based on conventional NFL wisdom that McFadden is the draft's best back. Nobody blinked when the Jets used the third overall pick on Blair Thomas, but I'm rather certain the Emmitt Smith kid drafted 14 picks later ended up being a better back.

Mayock acknowledges that McFadden will be the first back off the board, and Jerry willing, he'll be long gone by the time the Cowboys get on the clock. Cowboy fans should be thrilled if Mendenhall is available at No. 22. Oregon's Jonathan Stewart or Arkansas' Felix Jones could combine with Marion "The Barbarian" Barber to form one of the league's elite one-two punches, too.

Of course, my official advice to Jerry is to get a CB and WR in the first round and grab Texas' Jamaal Charles later to be the Cowboys' change-of-pace back.
