DMN Blog: Crystal ball sees Jenkins and Jones as Cowboys

by Tim MacMahon

Hashmarks star Matt Mosley, my mentor in self-promotion, wants the world to know that he's nailed the Cowboys first pick in the last five drafts. I'd like to see evidence from 2003-05, but I do recall him calling Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Spencer.

Does that mean we should put more stock in Mosley's mock draft? Probably not, but I will milk a post out of it.

Here's his Cowboys picks (though he believes they'll trade No. 22, which would be a wise move because of the curse):

22. Cowboys -- Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida: Some of you guys are convinced that Tampa Bay will take Jenkins, but don't be fooled by the whole proximity angle. Yes, they like the kid, but I don't think they're going to draft him. A lot of people connected with the Cowboys love Arkansas running back Felix Jones, including Jerry Jones. That said, the Cowboys think they can find a running back later in the draft. The same can't be said for an elite corner. Of course, the Cowboys will try to trade down with this pick, but if they can't, Jenkins is their man.
28. Cowboys -- Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas: If he slides this far, Jerry Jones will be waiting to catch him. This will cause columnists such as Randy Galloway to flip out, but I'm afraid the Cowboys aren't going to take a wide receiver in the first round. Limas Sweed is a possibility, but he needs to have a strong pro day.

I've made my case for waiting until the second round for a running back, especially if a WR of Sweed's caliber is there at No. 28.

That's not to say that Felix Jones wouldn't be a great fit as Marion "The Barbarian" Barber's backup and a dynamic kick returner. It is important to note, however, that Jones struggles to catch punts.

I know that because I chatted yesterday with Arkansas RB coach Tim Horton, who called punt catching Jones' only real weakness. You'll read more from Horton when we feature Jones in an upcoming series on draft prospects that could be fits for the Cowboys. That series is scheduled to start a week from Monday.
