Why is Terrell Owens Likable

He Is Radiant --

I have stopped watching NFL football after graduate school. I think it was because I have moved to a different city and my favorite quarterback Boomer Esiason has long retired.

In 2006, one Sunday I was flipping through the TV channels and a radiant figure on screen caught my eye, a football player on the field, on the sideline with his teammates. It was hard to miss that glow around him. There was a sweet, soft fluidity about him, pure and sweet like we see from a baby. In a grown man? Who is this guy? I wondered, waiting for him to turn and face the camera. It was an unfamiliar face and I learned from the TV reporter that he was T.O., for Terrell Owens.

What a beautiful person! From that moment on I couldn´t get off TV as long as Dallas Cowboys are playing. How on earth does he manage to look like that? No makeup, all sweat, yet radiantly beautiful?

Before I knew, I have become a Cowboys´ fan. Sundays are paramount important, and I even bought a Cowboys hat to go with the game. And I subscribed Cowboy videos from iTune, and watched each game highlights many times during the week.

He Loves People --

I heard that he was wronged while playing at Philadelphia Eagles, no one in that city likes him any more, he couldn´t sell his house after he left Philly for Dallas, and he had to write a book to speak for himself.

So, that Sunday in 2007, Cowboys played at the Eagles, and won. I watched for any signs of animosity from the crowd. Instead, I saw T.O. waving to the crowd, with such love on his face, it brought me to tears. This must be his secret, and why I liked him – no grudge, and a lot of love.

Along the way with T.O. and the Cowboys, I learned to love many other people on the team – Tony Romo, Coach Phillips, Jason Witten, Marion Barber, and after reading an article on NFL.com about T.O. and his coach Ray Sherman, I love him, too, because he made T.O. shine all season long.

He Is Humble --

T.O. has played very well in the season, but each time he was interviewed, I saw a sincere humble person in front of the camera. He is important to the team, he knows that, and everyone knows that. Yet he always gives credit to his team. I know he is sincere because he mentioned the details of the game and know exactly who has contributed what, not just a gesture with a general comment.

He Guards His Speech --

After performing really well and won a big game, the NFL Network interviewed him. He was clearly on top of the world, yet he guarded his ego and his speech, and praised God and his teammates. His humbleness was sincere and real, and beautiful.

Well, he had a slip of tongue about Tony Romo and his girl friend after losing a game, and caused headlines. But that´s exactly what I felt after the game, and it just felt great to hear him say it! Nothing against Tony and his personal life, it was just a frustrating game for a Cowboys´ fan.

He Is Focused --

Each week he practices hard and brings his best performance to the field. When he was there, he was all there. He is one with what he does to please his God and his audience, and nothing else. We all see how distracting it is on the top – fame, ego, media, criticism, money, ... , yet T.O. has consistently focused on one thing that mattered the most to the fan – do his best on the field.

All in all, his performance on the field has made my days richer, his love of people has made me love many, his professionalism has set a good example for me, and his radiant beauty has convinced me that he is truly living his life for God, and for the NFL fans.

May be this is the way to serve humanity – do you best at your profession, love the world, and be humble. T.O. has shown a shining example. God bless him!
