Barber's contract details

I just got the details of Barber's contract, and it's even more favorable than I thought it would be.

Barber got the minimum salaries in 2008 and 2009 and no extra bonuses before 2010. So his cap numbers for 2008 and 2009 (the only capped years currently remaining) are only $2,526,720 and $2,620,000.

In 2010, the first scheduled uncapped year, he gets a $4 million roster bonus. That's the remainder of his $16 million in guaranteed bonuses that has been reported. He also has small roster bonuses in 2011 and 2012.

Here are his cap numbers (note that only 2008 and 2009 even have a cap right now) --

2008 $2,526,720 (includes standard $6,720 workout bonus)
2009 $2,620,000
2010 $9,860,000
2011 $6,750,000
2012 $8,000,000
2013 $8,250,000
2014 $7,000,000

If the salary cap is extended before 2010, that season's cap number easily can be reduced to less than $4.5 million through simple restructuring (prorating his roster bonus and the portion of his salary above the minimum).

Had we not signed Barber by the deadline on Tuesday, his cap number this season could have been the same, but his 2009 cap number would have had to have been much higher to comply with the rules that prevent teams from dumping too much into the uncapped seasons. When he signed the contract, though, the uncapped seasons didn't start until 2012.
