DMN Burnett Blog: Inside 2.5 hours to Gametime!
by Kevin Burnett
Once I get to the stadium and open that locker the week ends and the countdown begins.
Count down to what? GAMETIME! As soon as I walk in the I drop of my tickets for will call, if I have any, I go sit in my locker. As I sit in my locker I read the game program and say what's up to all the players. Hank (Anthony Henry), Juice (J. Jones), BJ (Bradie), Dirt (Keith Davis), Three 1 ( DUH), Fasano and 35 ( J. Reeves). After I relax a few minutes, I hurry up and change into a shirt and shorts and go get my ankles taped. I don't have to worry about Flow tossing me on game days. Once I'm taped I have about 2 hours and 15 minutes left before kickoff.
At this time I'm back at my locker checking everything making sure I'm ready to go. I check my cleats, insoles, pads, pants, helmet, jersey, any braces, and the last thing I check are my socks. They usually forget to put and extra pair of socks in my locker. (I have two game looks cold weather and warm weather) Warm weather game I wear two blue socks and for cold weather I wear high whites (keeps the wheels warm). Right before I get ready to go outside and warm up I cut my socks (whites) at the toe so they come up pretty high. I will also have on a pair of footie's no matter what the weather is. FYI the blue socks called cheaters don't have to be cut.
Socks are cut now I'm ready to go. I get my cleats on and two rolls of spat tape (vet wrap you see this on horses legs when they race). And I'm out the door with about 2:10 left (No Ipod most of the time). I walk down the tunnel and slap a few fives as I reach the end of the tunnel. Once out of the tunnel and at the goal line I take a 50 speed run down to the other goal line. With each time I go down, I gradually build up to full speed which takes 4-6 trip down and back. After my last one I stretch for 10-15 minutes then go back into the locker room. If I feel tight I warm up more with our strength coaches and get one of them to stretch me.
When I get back to the locker from its all business the only thing you can hear is the music playing (2pac, TEXAS MUSIC, Lil Jon you guys get the point) no one is really talking or playing. 1:45 left on the pre-game clock with the first group getting ready to go out. I move toward my locker grab my pants and put my thigh pads in and slide my pants on. Most of you know I don't wear knee pads I use to there really was no use for them. If you get hit in your leg by a 300 pounder it doesn't matter anyway. While I'm at my locker I pull out my Bible and prepare my mind for concentration and focus. I mainly go off of my mood and that determines what I read. I get myself together pray and let the LORD know that I'm thankful, I ask for forgiveness, (all the curse words that are about to come out of my mouth, they slip sometime) health, concentration, focus, and I say "AMEN".
I put my shoulder pads on with help. Its takes two people to put my pads on because our jerseys are made so tight (makes it harder for people to hold you). After Bucky is done pulling on my pads I tape my wrist and go sit back down.
Check back after work for the rest.
