DMN Blog: Thoughts from Ken Hamlin
by Todd Archer
I talked to Ken Hamlin not too long ago. He's in LA getting ready for the ESPY's. We'll have some stuff for tomorrw's paper, too.
Hamlin took a bet on himself last year by signing a one-year deal with the Cowboys. Remember, in 2005 he wasn't sure he would have lead a normal life, let alone play football after an altercation outsdie a Seattle bar left him with a cracked skull. Now he has one of the richest deals in league history for a safety.
"You know, there was a few down days, but I tried to stay positive," Hamlin said. "You try to make sure goals are set and try to reach them. Regardless of what happened a few years ago, it's all a learning experience. You live and you learn.
"At times you've got to take chances. [His agent] Kennard [McGuire] had a lot of confidence in me and I had confidence in myself. I'm just glad this all worked out the way it did."
McGuire, who also represents center Andre Gurode and rookie tight end Martellus Bennett, was happy, too of course, but for reasons other than money.
"I'm very proud and happy for Ken," he said. "To overcome what he had to overcome and endure and to find the success he's had and now the long-term security, it's thrilling. He's earned it."
Hamlin said the hardest part of the off-season was not being around his teammates. He constantly heardfrom them with calls or text messages and is looking forward to training camp next week so he can be on the field with them.
