FWST: Cowboys’ hot routes

Cowboys’ hot routes

Position battle
Martellus Bennett vs. Tony Curtis
Bennett was drafted to be the tight end receiving threat opposite Pro Bowl starter Jason Witten. He has the size and athletic ability that has the Cowboys drooling, but he didn’t play in a sophisticated passing scheme at Texas A&M and still has a lot to learn. Although Curtis is not a seasoned veteran, he knows the system and has been productive when given the opportunity. He had three catches last season, all for touchdowns.

21 vs. 81
Cornerback Adam Jones spiced up the usually mundane receiver-cornerback one-on-one drills Saturday by purposely lining up across from Pro Bowl receiver Terrell Owens. Jones held his own the first two times before giving up a catch. Not only was Jones competitive but he was also fearless. He stood up a couple running backs for head-on tackles during team drills. Said coach Wade Phillips: "He’s a competitor. He’s obviously an athlete. He is feisty and he is tough. He butted up a few guys."

Play of the day
Quarterback Tony Romo connected with receiver Terrell Owens for a long touchdown in team drills against cornerback Terence Newman. It was simply pay back for a pass intended for Owens that Newman picked off earlier in practice.

Countdown
42 Days until season opener, 3:15 p.m. Sept. 7 at Cleveland

The right Choice
Rookie running back Tashard Choice may have been the second running back taken by the Cowboys in the draft behind first rounder Felix Jones, but don’t be surprised if he has a big role. While Jones will play a variety roles from slot receiver, kick returner to catching passes out of the backfield, look for Choice to be the primary every-down backup to starter Marion Barber. Choice has the size to take the pounding inside, plus he is a willing special-teams performer.

Wade’s Words
We have characters who have character, and I think that is important.
