DMN Blog: Live from Oxnard XIX: A Magic moment
by Tim MacMahon
Weather: A steamy, sunny 74 degrees.
The Cowboys didn't do a whole lot during this morning's glorified walkthrough. We'll get some action this afternoon. They're in helmets and shoulder pads.
Before things get going, I'd like to give a shout-out to loyal readers Michelle Witten and Cortney Carpenter, the lovely wives of Jason and Bobby. They arrived in Oxnard this week -- no, they aren't joined by that other lady who went with them to Cabo -- and have had a couple nice chit-chats with your favorite blogger.
Follow the jump, refresh, etc., if you wanna read about practice ...
5:27 -- Wade Phillips said DE Jason Hatcher's shoulder is better. Hatcher will participate in contract drills today and is expected to play against the Chargers.
5:30 -- Quick Hard Knocks note: Wade Phillips said the coaching staff would watch tonight's show so they could poke fun at secondary coach Dave Campo, the star of the Cowboys' previous Hard Knocks experience. That reminds me that I need to ask Campo if he's bringing his wet suit to San Diego. ... Players just started position warmup drills.
5:33 -- Sports celebrity sighting: NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson is roaming the practice field. Wade Phillips and Brian Stewart rushed over to give him a big hug. Gotta say that I was a huge fan of the Showtime Lakers.
5:36 -- Stretching just started. ... The Cowboys let Ms. Price, aka Hugs Lady, inside the fence. She's standing by some media members, sporting a Pacman jersey and hollering players' names.
5:41 -- Actor Rob Lowe is here, too. Not sure if he still qualifies as a celebrity, but Calvin "Lucky" Watkins says he does. ... Stretching over. .... Magic marched out to midfield. The Cowboys huddled around him for a pep talk of some sort.
5:44 -- Turn on ESPN 103.3 if you wanna hear Jerry ramble. He's going on Galloway and Co. right now.
5:47 -- Magic just wrapped up his speech. ... Cowboys broke the huddle and got to work (defensive position drill and offense running plays vs. air).
5:49 -- CBs Terence Newman (groin) and Quincy Butler (hamstring) and DE Marcus Dixon (back) are the only players who aren't dressed out this afternoon. Wade Phillips said those three have been ruled out of this weekend's game.
5:53 -- Second-round TE Martellus Bennett just had a pass clank off his hands after running an out route vs. air.
5:56 -- Jerry on paying all that money to players and coaches this offseason: "I've got rocks in my pocket so I don't float away. I'm real light." ... Competitive stuff should start in a few minutes.
5:59 -- Horn just sounded. Headed to the field. Be back in a bit.
6:16 -- A lot of running game in 11-on-11. Marion Barber looks sharp, hitting holes quickly and getting north-south. He had a stiff arm on CB Alan Ball that would have been legal, since he didn't coil his arm up and use it as a weapon. ... Tashard Choice does a good job of making one cut and getting upfield. ... SS Roy Williams got to Felix Jones near the line of scrimmage on a sweep. ... Undrafted RB Keon Lattimore made a nice cutback when he was contained on a sweep. .... SS Dowayne Davis picked off a Brad Johnson out intended for Martellus Bennett. Davis made a nice break, and Bennett stumbled to the ground instead of making a play for the ball. ... DE Marcus Smith showed impressive athleticism, mirroring Johnson on a rollout to the right and leaping to bat down the pass. ... Special teams work now.
6:21 -- Just started 11-on-11 again. Brad Johnson hit Tony Curtis on a deep out ion front of Roy Williams. ... Checkdown to Felix Jones, with CB Mike Jenkins in good position to make the play. ... NT Jay Ratliff and DE Marcus Spears are working at their regular positions. ... Miles Austin caught an out route with Zach Thomas all over him.
6:23 -- Mike Jenkins was caught in poor position while chasing Sam Hurd on a drag route. Hurd slipped an attempted arm tackle and turned upfield. ... Adam "Pacman" Jones broke up a Tony Romo pass intended for Deon "Cricket" Anderson. Don't think the Cricket-Pacman matchup is one that favors the offense in the passing game. ... Marion Barber made a one-handed grab on a high swing pass, but Kevin Burnett would have had a clean shot on him at the line of scrimmage.
6:27 -- Romo slid a few steps to his right to buy time to throw and connected with T.O. on a post. The ball was a little underthrown, but Alan Ball had no chance to knock it down. ... WR Isaiah Stanback stumbled coming out of his break on an out route. ... Good pressure by sixth-round OLB Erik Walden vs. the No. 2 offense.
6:30 -- Fifth-round CB Orlando Scandrick ripped the ball away from T.O. on an underneath route. ... Good pressure by Walden again, this time coming from the other side. He beat Cory Lekkerkerker and forced Richard Bartel to throw the ball away. ... LB Bobby Carpenter had a sliding pick on a hook route. Wife Cortney clapped in the family section. ... OLB Anthony Spencer had the next pass clank off his chest. Bartel isn't exactly having a great afternoon. ... Pat McQuistan was working at LG with the 2s.
6:34 -- Horn just sounded. ... Special teams work about to start again.
6:38 -- Forgot to mention that former Terrell High QB Eric Bishop is here this afternoon. You probably know him as Jamie Foxx. He's been tight with T.O. since they were teammates in Any Given Sunday.
6:41 -- Nothing exciting happening. Working on punt return team assignment stuff.
6:47 -- Horn sounded. Action about to start. Be back with highlights after post-practice interviews.
