DMN Blog: Man, that was a great practice!!!!!
by Tim MacMahon
Well, I didn't see a whole lot of exciting stuff during this afternoon's practice in the indoor facility, but Wade Phillips sure was fired up about it.
"We had probably our best practice of the year so far!" Wade beamed.
The Cowboys are getting into their regular-season routine, meaning they worked on specific stuff for this week's game. After all, the Governor's Cup is a great source of pride. No way do the Cowboys plan on letting those sorry Houstonians celebrate during their last trip to Texas Stadium.
And, golly, Wade sure was proud of the focus and concentration the Cowboys showed today.
Follow the jump for a few details of stuff that I could actually see.
*OK, first a disclaimer: The media couldn't see a whole bunch of practice because the offensive guys who aren't in usually stand behind the play. And it's hard to see around those offensive linemen.
*Here are the guys who sat out other than Roy Williams, who participated in some stuff: FB Ronnie Cruz (shoulder), WR Miles Austin (knee), CB Quincy Butler (hamstring), S Tyler Everett (back), CB Terence Newman (groin), LB Kevin Burnett (knee), LB Anthony Spencer (knee) and DE Marcus Dixon (back).
*I can't see any way TE Rodney Hannah cracks the 53-man roster, but he followed up a good preseason game (four catches, 52 yards) by making a couple impressive catches during this practice. The best was on a seam route on which he made a smooth adjustment to catch a ball on his back hip.
*SS Pat Watkins, filling in for the starters while Williams rested, had the play of the day with a leaping pick. Watkins was in Cover 2 and made a good break on a corner route. The 6-5 dude skied to snatch the ball before WR Mark Bradford could get his hands on it.
*DE Jason Hatcher appeared to be especially active. He wore out backup RG James Marten during pass-rush drills and dominated against the second-team OL during team drills.
*LT Flozell Adams and LG Kyle Kosier had some trouble when working together during pass-rush drills. They didn't appear to be on the same page against stunts.
*A sign that Wade Phillips plans to let loose a little on defense: Zach Thomas and Bradie James both had would-be sacks after blitzing up the middle.
*Saw the Jay Ratliff-Tank Johnson-Chris Canty line a fair amount.
*A moment that'll make Jim Garrett cringe if it makes the Hard Knocks cut: WR Todd Lowber beat first-round CB Mike Jenkins on a go route, but Lowber dropped a pass that hit him in both hands after he had to make a slight adjustment.
