Five Things From Friday Night

Follow Mickey Spagnola, Nick Eatman & Rob Phillips as they follow the Cowboys players, coaches and executives bringing you the latest news, notes, and rumors as they get it.

*Linebacker Bobby Carpenter capitalized on his increased reps in the first-team nickel and dime packages by recording a team-high eight tackles. Last week against Denver, starter Bradie James stayed on the field in Kevin Burnett's place. This time Carpenter filled in for the injured Burnett (knee scope) and was very active.

*Rookie cornerback Orlando Scandrickwas really impressive. He's so active; he always seems to be around the ball and doesn't mind taking a chance or two. He moved into the slot on the first-team nickel and finished with five tackles and one pass breakup.

*Tackles Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo got a little chip help from tight end Jason Witten, but both did a good job of containing defensive end Mario Williams. All of a sudden Houston's so-called disaster pick from 2006 is looking pretty good; Williams had 14 sacks last year.

*Two more injuries to roster-safe players, starting guard Kyle Kosier (sprained foot) and wide receiver Isaiah Stanback (shoulder subluxation), could affect position numbers at final cuts. We'll know more from the MRI results, but looks like both could be out at least a couple of weeks. Do the Cowboys keep an extra offensive lineman? With Miles Austin already out, looks like they'll certainly have to go heavier than expected at wide receiver. Could spell good news for Danny Amendola and/or Mike Jefferson, who stepped up with three catches for 33 yards.

*Defensive coordinator Brian Stewart said the defensive helmet communication system went much more smoothly in this game than against Denver. With Kevin Burnett out, Bradie James again was the only player wearing the device in his helmet. Last week was Stewart's first time balancing the headset communication with James and giving hand signals to the defense when James went out.
