DC.COM Blog: 'Boys Begin Contract Talks With Ware

Just got word from Rob Phillips down in Mobile, Ala., where he’s not only covering the Senior Bowl, but trying to keep up with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who finally talked to reporters on Tuesday.

While Jones steered clear of hot topics such as Terrell Owens’ future, the decision to cut Pacman Jones, the recent coaching situation involving Jason Garrett and the dismissal of Brian Stewart, or even Anthony Spencer’s latest off-the-field issue, the owner and GM still had plenty to discuss.

For starters, Jones said the Cowboys have already begun talks on a new contract for DeMarcus Ware, whose agent Pat Dye Jr. is in Mobile this week and had a face-to-face meeting with Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ director of player personnel. Ware has another year before he becomes a free agent, but considering this will likely be the richest deal in franchise history and possibly the biggest for any NFL defensive player, the Cowboys obviously want to get started as early as possible.

Also, Jones said the Cowboys will not be huge players in free agency, which begins February 27. The club has about $10 million to spend, but don’t expect it to go towards any big-named players.

Jones also talked about the team’s draft needs, his evaluations of the Senior Bowl talent, and even other topics such as the Cowboys’ radio station contract.

But stay tuned to the site because Rob will be bringing a full Q & A with Jerry later in the evening.
