DMN Blog: Troy Aikman remains a big fan of Tony Romo
by Tim MacMahon
As he's done dozens of times over the last few years, Troy Aikman raved about Tony Romo today.
"I think Tony Romo is a terrific talent," Aikman said. "If I was starting a team and Tony Romo was my quarterback, I'd be awfully excited about that. I know that the Cowboys are excited about it."
Aikman also had a lot of good things to say about Romo during a January appearance on Michael Irvin's ESPN radio show. But Aikman's take that Romo "hasn't fully grasped what being the Cowboys quarterback is all about" is all anybody remembers.
Given a chance to elaborate on that comment, Aikman pointed out that he did say a lot of positive things about Romo that day. Aikman also mentioned that he had talked to Romo since then, "and Tony knows how I feel about him."
"My only point is being a Cowboys quarterback is something that you really kind of grow into," Aikman said. "It takes some time to fully appreciate what this job and that position means to so many people, and I sense that the next time Tony's asked about a big loss or a disappointment, I think he'll probably answer that differently. ...
"It was not intended to sound like a criticism. It was someone who loves to play the game, and it's on-the-job training right now, if you will, on how many people are truly impacted by how the Cowboys lose.
"Trust me, I've been on that end of some pretty difficult losses. Sometimes you're driving home and you say to yourself, 'Man, it is still a game, it is still entertainment.' But for the millions of people out there who live and die every week with the success of the Cowboys, that's kind of their escape. They want to hear a little bit more than that. That was my only thing.
"I think in the last year and a half, I think Tony has gotten a pretty good feel at this time for what he says and what that then means. When he responds after a game, I think he is realizing that his words carry a lot of weight."
Is that true not only with the fans but in the locker room?
"Yeah," Aikman answered. "Yeah."
