Cowboys Stanback In Danger of Not Making the Roster?

With the additions of Stephen McGee, David Buehler, and Manuel Johnson through the NFL draft last weekend, Isaiah Stanback’s status on the roster may be in question. Owner Jerry Jones had expressed the Cowboys’ intentions of using the services of Stanback along with Felix Jones with the implementation of the wildcat offense in the upcoming season. However finding a spot on the active roster for a player who is as raw at their position as Stanback is, may prove to be difficult.

The Cowboys have expressed their interest in keeping three quarterbacks on the active roster, meaning they have to clear a spot for 4th round pick Stephen McGee. The former Aggie would seem to be a likely candidate to run the wildcat offense with his versatility and experience with the ball in his hands as more than a passing quarterback, which threatens one of Stanback’s projected roles on the team. They have also committed to keeping Buehler on the active roster to handle kickoff duties. They also plan to use Buehler on more special teams units to further justify keeping two kickers. That’s two more roster spots, that were not occupied last year.

With the addition of McGee, Stanback will certainly have to prove him-self as a dependable option at wide receiver. This means he will likely be battling Manuel Johnson for the fifth wide receiver spot. Beating Johnson out may prove to be difficult for Stanback, given the fact that Johnson is already a more polished receiver, despite being a rookie. Another big factor may be his ability to stay healthy. In the past two years, Isaiah has battle a shoulder dislocation that has frequently kept him off the active roster.
