DMN Blog: Already interest in Greg Ellis
By Todd Archer
When news broke of the Cowboys' release of Greg Ellis earlier today, the phone of Ellis' agent, James D. Williams, started to ring from interested parties.
"Greg is appreciative of the time he spent in Dallas and the many good years he had there," Williams said. "The organization treated him very well in spite of the times that we had to deal with the business side. Dallas is home for him and we understand everything must come to an end in this business. He wished them well and they wished him well. Now he's free to go on."
Williams would not divulge the teams but he believes a deal will be done in time for Ellis to be ready to go for training camp. He said the No. 1 concern for Ellis is family and he does not want to uproot for the sake of uprooting.
So, do we put Carolina on the list? Ellis played at the University of Carolina and is a Carolina native.
Then let's look at the teams with Ellis ties - Miami, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Cincinnati - right off the bat.
The Dolphins turned into Cowboys South the last two years once Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland took over, but they just re-signed Jason Taylor and have Joey Porter.
Tampa Bay's new defensive coordinator is Jim Bates, who was Ellis' position coach at one time. And Philadelphia just added former coordinator Brian Stewart. Mike Zimmer is running the defense in Cincinnati and the Bengals have signed Tank Johnson and Roy Williams this off-season. They have a need for pass rushers and Ellis still can do that job if not be an every down guy.
