DMN Blog: Defense wins

By Todd Archer/Reporter

Tuesday's workout at Standridge Stadium was clearly a win for the defense.

The Cowboys showed an assortment of blitz packages that include one where both safeties timed their sprints up the middle leaving the middle of the field exposed. I even saw one look that had DeMarcus Ware lined up off the line of scrimmage almost lined up like an outside linebacker in a 4-3, although it was a 3-4 look. (And at one point, Ware went stride for stride with Felix Jones in coverage.)

It's June so it's waaaaaaay too early tell what's for real and what isn't as far as the defense is concerned.

"You don't know until you put the pads on," linebacker Bradie James siad. "Right now it's all window dressing."

From the looks of things, the Cowboys appear ready to put a lot of pressure on their cornerbacks by bringing pressure from just about everywhere. Without the corners, Wade Phillips wouldn't be able to do so much.

And now to the offense - it's waaaaaaay too early to say it's in trouble. Sam Hurd (quadriceps) and Miles Austin (hamstring) did not practice, so Kevin Ogletree and Manny Johnson were taking the second-team snaps. They are not game planning for the different looks either.

But ...

"They put on a show today," Roy Williams said. "They came out ready to play. We have to come back and bring it to those guys. We say we're not playing against those guys, that we're playing against ourselves and getting better, but they've got on opposite jerseys than we do and we have to win. That's my approach."
