ILB Oliver Hoyte of NC State has signed
Oliver Hoyte
ILB | (6'2", 246, 4.7) | NORTH CAROLINA ST
Strengths: Possesses very good size with an ideal combination of height and bulk. Is well built and powerful. Has very good overall strength. Shows excellent instincts vs. the run. Reads and reacts quickly. Is disciplined and does not take a lot of false steps. He is at his best when working downhill as a run stuffer. He fills hard and shows great intensity. Has the size, base and strength to match up in the phone booth. Will take on blockers and disengage quickly. Does a good job of using his hands to get through traffic. He shows good burst when coming forward and will make a lot of plays in the backfield because of his instincts and good initial quickness. He has excellent tackling skills. Is big and powerful at the POA. Wraps up in space and rarely fails to finish. He is a blue-collar player with great toughness. Played second half of senior season with an ankle injury. Well respected player and team leader.
Weaknesses: Lacks ideal speed. Does not show great closing burst and will not be a sideline-to-sideline pursuit LB in the NFL. He is a bit stiff in his hips. Lacks ideal COD skills. Has limitations in man and @#%$ coverage. Does not show great ball skills in coverage and is not a playmaker in the passing game. Does not show great instincts or speed as a pass rusher when turned loose on the blitz. Upside is as a two-down LB at the next level. Also had durability problems throughout his collegiate career.
Overall: Hoyte played mostly on special teams as a reserve linebacker during his true freshman season in 2002. He took over as an 11-game starter in 2003 but missed one game (Georgia Tech) with a knee injury. As a junior in 2004, he was the leading tackler on the nation's top-ranked defense, even though he played just nine snaps in the final two games due to a knee injury. He also finished with 14.5 tackles for loss that season. Hoyte started all 11 games he played, missing one game (Wake Forest) because of an ankle sprain, and finishing with 79 tackles, 8.5 TFL and one sack. Hoyte is not a great athlete and he has just decent straight-line speed. He also has had trouble staying healthy throughout his career. However, Hoyte is a big, physical run-stuffing inside linebacker prospect with the size, strength and instincts to compete as a two-down starter in the NFL. He also possesses ideal mental toughness and tackling skills in order to contribute on special teams' at the next level. As such, Hoyte grades out as a solid fourth-or-fifth round prospect in the 2006 class.
