Ready to saddle up in Dallas

Former Notre Dame tight end Anthony Fasano of Verona -- a second-round pick by the Cowboys Saturday -- chronicles his thoughts on the NFL Draft.
All the months of waiting are finally over. I'm a Dallas Cowboy.
On Saturday, I played golf in the afternoon, then got together with my family and friends. I was watching TV for only about 45 minutes before I got picked. That's when I got a call from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and coach Bill Parcells.
I knew it was a team calling, but I wasn't sure which one until I looked up at the TV and saw Dallas was on the clock. Mr. Jones and Coach Parcells were on the speakerphone and they said, "Congratulations and welcome. We're happy and excited to have you. We're bringing you in to play early. We think it's a good fit because of the offense you played in at Notre Dame."
At first, I thought about the fact they already have a Pro Bowl tight end in Jason Witten. Someone from the outside who doesn't know might say it doesn't make sense, but they're trying to do different things with their offense where they'll use both of us on the field at the same time.
Playing for Coach Parcells is going to be great. It really hasn't hit me yet. Like I said before, I've gotten used to being around people I watched as a kid, but it's going to be real exciting playing for him.
It was kind of funny I got drafted by an NFC East team because my friends are mostly Giants fans and they didn't want to root against me twice a year. So they've decided they're going to be Cowboys fans for 14 weeks out of the year.
I heard that Miles Austin, the receiver from Monmouth, signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent. That'll be good because I don't know anybody down there besides running back Julius Jones, who played one year with me at Notre Dame. I'll be on a different schedule than Miles, but it'll be good to have someone there to relate to -- especially a guy from Jersey. And I can't wait to meet Rob Petitti, the offensive tackle who grew up in Rumson.
I'm headed to Dallas Thursday morning for orientation and a rookie minicamp. I'll be back Sunday night and then I have to head back to school for graduation. The next day, I'll be back in Dallas to work out before the minicamp with the entire team.
I won't have a lot of free time until late June and early July, so I have to wait until then to get myself settled down there and find a place to live. It shouldn't be a problem and I liked what little I saw of the city when I went down for a visit.
I'm a Cowboy and I'm loving it. Things have turned real quickly for me.
