Cowboys work out a new kicker

IRVING -- As if the uncertainty surrounding the Cowboys kicking game wasn’t enough, kicker Mike Vanderjagt broke a week-long silence ...and then it got weird.
The Cowboys worked out Desperados kicker Carlos Martinez of the Arena Football League, but didn’t sign him to a contract.
Although Cowboys coach Bill Parcells still maintained Friday that he hasn’t made a decision on whether Vanderjagt or Shaun Suisham would kick field goals against Washington on Sunday, a source told the Star-Telegram Thursday that Vanderjagt was going to get the nod.
The eight-year veteran Vanderjagt, who signed a three-year, $5.4 million contract to be the savior of the Cowboys kicking game, wouldn’t confirm nor deny his status for Sunday.
“I don’t know,” Vanderjagt said with laugh. “I have been sworn to secrecy.”
“I don’t know,’” he continued. “I am not at liberty to say. I promise.”
Asked what his expectations were for Sunday, Vanderjagt initially stammered before saying, “My expectations are to watch the offense and the defense. Now whether I am on the couch or the sidelines, I am not sure.”
Considering his status as the most accurate kicker in league history, it’s safe to assume that Vanderjagt finds all this amusing. Although he was healthy, Parcells made him inactive for the season opener against the Jaguars last week and used inexperienced second-year kicker Suisham. Suisham missed a 36-yarder in the game.
Parcells said he hadn’t seen enough from Vanderjagt because he was hobbled in the preseason with a groin injury. And when he did kick he was inconsistent at best, Parcells said.
