IRVING, Texas - Drew Bledsoe bounced back from a disappointing Week One performance, and the Cowboys' defense shut down the Redskins in the second half to win handily, 27-10, Sunday night at Texas Stadium.
The Cowboys (1-1) scored on three of their first four possessions to take a 17-3 lead in the second quarter, but Redskins running back Rock Cartwright returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to swing the momentum Washington's way by halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Julius Jones turned a short screen into a 43-yard gain to the Washington 18, but the play was called back because of an illegal block by Marco Rivera.
The Cowboys eventually were forced to punt, and later in the quarter, Redskins safety Sean Taylor forced a Jones fumble. But Roy Williams picked off Mark Brunell's pass at the 1-yard line four plays later, setting up a 99-yard touchdown drive by the Cowboys' offense. Bledsoe found Terry Glenn deep for a 40-yard score to put Dallas up 24-10.
Bledsoe finished 19-of-38 for 237 yards and two touchdowns.
Mike Vanderjagt, making his Cowboys debut after being bothered by a groin injury throughout preseason, then nailed a 50-yard field goal to put the game out of reach.
Vanderjagt also made a 26-yard attempt on the Cowboys' opening drive in the first quarter. The offense struck again eight plays later, when Bledsoe hit Patrick Crayton for a 4-yard touchdown to make the score 10-0. And two drives later, Marion Barber rumbled in for a 1-yard touchdown run before Cartwright's 100-yard return.
Back-to-back personal fouls on linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Akin Ayodele led to a 39-yard field goal by Redskins kicker John Hall in the second quarter. The Redskins (0-2) started Ladell Betts at running back in place of Clinton Portis (shoulder), who was inactive.
Cowboys wide receiver Jamaica Rector (ankle) was inactive after being listed as questionable during the week. Patrick Crayton and Terence Newman split punt return duties.
Rookie linebacker Bobby Carpenter was active for his first regular-season game and got some snaps at inside linebacker.
