Butler, an undrafted rookie cornerback from TCU, was released during training camp.

Left tackle Flozell Adams returned to practice today after missing the last two preseason games with a calf injury, Parcells said.

Nine-year veteran Jason Fabini will back up both Adams and the newly named starter at right tackle, Marc Colombo, Parcells said.

The Cowboys open the season on Sept. 10 in Jacksonville.

Parcells said he released second-year player Rob Petitti on Saturday because Fabini is more experienced. The progress seventh-round pick Pat McQuistan made during training camp and the preseason was another factor, the coach said.

“At least I have an experienced player in case something happened, and he has played left tackle in the league,” Parcells said of Fabini. “And I like (McQuistan) ability-wise a lot. He is better ability-wise than any other young offensive lineman we’ve had since I’ve been here.”

In other news:

-- Parcells said Terrell Owens practiced today and looked “OK.” Owens missed much of training camp and three of the team’s four preseason games with a hamstring injury.

-- Parcells suggested that fifth-round pick Patrick Watkins and veteran Keith Davis will share time at free safety.

-- Inside linebacker Bradie James missed practice with a groin injury.

-- Parcells said undrafted rookie Sam Hurd’s ability to play all three receiver positions was a big reason why he made the team. “He learned all three positions with no problem,” Parcells said. “He’s pretty sharp.” Parcells said Hurd, a Brackenridge graduate could dress for the Jacksonville game.

-- The practice squad will consist of Butler; tight end Jerome Collins, who was in camp with St. Louis; quarterback Matt Baker; guard D’Anthony Batiste; linebacker Carl-Johan Bjork; defensive end Stephen Bowen; tight end Tony Curtis; receiver Skyler Green, the team’s fourth-round pick; and running back Keylon Kincade.
