Big Tuna staying put in Big 'D'

(Jan. 20, 2007) -- Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells has changed his mind before and could do it again.

But the indications now are that he's planning to return for the 2007 season, according to NFL sources.

The reasons for this decision, which Parcells must give to the Cowboys by Feb. 1, are multiple. For starters, Parcells is planning to attend this week's Senior Bowl practices in Mobile, Ala. Were he retiring, Parcells would have little or no interest in watching some of college football's top prospects for the April NFL draft perform in Mobile.

Bills Parcells is showing all the signs that he'll return to Dallas, at least for one more season.

Also, Parcells has begun sifting through which assistant coaches he would want on his staff next season, and even has reached out to certain assistants around the league that he would like in Dallas. Were he not returning, he would be wasting his time.

Plus, a Cowboys official said that, while Dallas' assistant coaches have taken the past week off, Parcells was in his office each day, reporting to work as if there were another season to prepare for.

Of course, none of these signs with Parcells are absolute; they never are. Parcells can make a decision one day, and change his mind the next. The Cowboys front office even has gone so far as to compile a list of potential replacements should Parcells walk away.

One of the names near the top of the list, if not at the very top of it, is Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who fared well during his two head coaching stops in Denver and Buffalo.

One Cowboys front-office member said this week that the Cowboys are impressed with what Phillips could do with a 3-4 defense in Dallas, and that he might be just the coach to get maximum production out of pass-rusher DeMarcus Ware.

Then again, it looks like Phillips might have to wait at least a year before Parcells steps aside. For now, the signs point to his return.
