Phillips: Interview went “good”By MAC ENGEL

IRVING – San Diego defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said his interview with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for the club’s head coaching job went “good”.

“We had a good meeting. I enjoyed being here,” Phillips said. “I want to thank Jerry Jones for having me in. We had a very encompassing talk. I think he knows what I’m about as far as trying to get a hold of the things I thought I could do. I’ll just say it was a good meeting and we’ll go from there.”

The Cowboys are searching for a replacement for Bill Parcells, who retired Monday.

“Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys, America’s Team, those are all true,” Phillips said. “This is one of the premier jobs in the league in my opinion. And it always has been. They’ve kept it that way.”

Phillips, San Francisco offensive coordinator Norv Turner, New Orleans defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs and recently hired Jason Garrett are the top candidates for the job.

Garrett interviewed Wednesday and was added to the coaching staff Thursday. He’ll at least serve as offensive coordinator while remaining a candidate for the head coaching job.

“I don’t think it will take a long time. He has other people to talk to. I know that,” Phillips said. “We’ll just wait. This is part of the process. But I don’t think it will be a long, drawn out process. That’s what I’ve been told.”

Phillips, 60, is the son of former NFL coach Bum Phillips. He just completed his 30th NFL season and third with the Chargers.

“The Chargers have been great about it. They wish me all the luck in the world, but they don’t want to lose me,” Phillips said. “That’s what they’ve given me. I appreciate that from them.”

Phillips was interim head coach with Atlanta (three days) in 2003 after serving as defensive coordinator in 2002-2003. Before joining the Falcons, Phillips was vice president of football operations and head coach at Buffalo from 1998 to 2000. He has also served as defensive coordinator with the Bills (19898-1992), Philadelphia (1986-88), and New Orleans (1981-85).

In San Diego, Phillips directed the team’s 3-4 defense, the same scheme used by the Cowboys.

“Obviously, I like the 3-4 and have been coaching it a long time,” Phillips said. “ It gives you a lot of things, especially pass rush.”

Phillips said he talked to Jones, Parcells and Garrett Friday.

“I know Jason. I hadn’t worked with him yet, but I know him pretty well. I think he’s a bright young mind that’s going to do well in this league. He’s one of those rising stars,” Phillips said. “Bill said he’d help any way he could and he will.”
