FWST: CLARENCE E. HILL JR.: Cowboys work on a big addition

IRVING — The Cowboys said they had no plans on making a big splash in free agency.

Yet, on the first day of free agency, they began working on something "Big" — Leonard "Big" Davis, a former Texas Longhorn who is 6-foot-6 and 372 pounds.

An unrestricted free agent, Davis spent the past six seasons playing guard and tackle with the Arizona Cardinals. He is drawing interest from every team in the NFC East, according to his agent, Ryan Tollner.

Yet, it's no secret there is one team the player from Wortham prefers the Cowboys.

Davis toured the facilities and took a physical, but did not reach a contract agreement, and Davis left for a visit with the Redskins. Both sides said negotiations will continue.

Davis did not live up to expectations in Arizona, which made him the No. 2 overall pick in the 2001 draft. He never made the Pro Bowl and was part of an offensive line that routinely struggled. The Cardinals decided to let him go via free agency.

According to scouts, Davis is still a solid player who would give the Cowboys flexibility.

He could be an option at right tackle if they lose Marc Colombo in free agency and he could be an option at right guard for Marco Rivera, who might be forced to retire after having a second back surgery in the past three years.

Colombo and the Cowboys are far apart in contract talks. Colombo visited Denver on Friday.

Davis also could be an option at left tackle next year. Flozell Adams is in the final year of his contract.

Davis has missed only five games the past six years, starting 91.

Davis could be the first Longhorn-ex with the Cowboys since linebacker Kalen Thornton (2004-05) and the second since wide receiver Wane McGarity (1999-2001).
No Brad Johnson, yet

Despite reports that quarterback Brad Johnson will visit Valley Ranch on Sunday, the Cowboys said Friday that nothing has been set up.

The Cowboys are seeking a veteran backup behind Tony Romo. Minnesota released Johnson, a 15-year veteran, this week.
