Could Dwayne Bowe Break Trend In Dallas?

by Sportz Assassin

In the AOL Fanhouse Mock Draft, I used the Cowboys' #22 pick to select wide receiver Dwayne Bowe [click link to find out why]. It's a pick that I found to be somewhat controversial at the time ... but since then, there has been some mock drafting that finds Bowe around in the same spot. Hopefully, for Dallas, that would break a trend. And, no, not the one of Dallas not using a first round pick on an offensive player since 1997.

The LSU factor. Tim MacMahon of The Cowboys Blog on DallasNews.com doesn't like the recent history of LSU players donning the blue star.

But let me explain to you why the Cowboys absolutely, positively cannot draft Bowe. He went to LSU. That's it. That's the reason. Consider the Cowboys' luck with LSU guys. Gil Brandt and Jimmy Johnson were smart enough to never draft a Bayou Bengal. Here's hoping Jerry has wised up after getting burned a whole bunch.

MacMahon goes into the vault and cites examples ... including tight end David LaFleur. LaFleur was the Cowboys first round pick in the 1997 draft with the ... 22nd pick. Yep, ten years ago, the last time the Cowboys drafted an offensive player in the first round, it was on a "receiver" from LSU with the #22 pick. Dallas has also used picks on LSU's Bradie James, Stephen Peterman and Skylar Green.

There is also Marcus Spears in 2005, who hasn't become the star that many figured he be. However, in Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme, he could thrive and become the terror that was promised.
