The Army on Tuesday celebrated the return of the 500,000th service member to take advantage of the two-week R&R program from the war zone, according to an Army press release.
Central Command’s Rest and Recuperation Leave Program began Sept. 25, 2003, and it gives service members a 15-day break during their deployments overseas.
To mark the milestone, the Army and officials for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport had a ceremony at the airport. Maj. Gen. Sean Byrne, commanding general of Human Resources Command, welcomed home the deployed soldiers and Defense Department civilians.
Other guests at the event were members of the Texas legislature, veterans’ organizations, cheerleaders from the Dallas Cowboys football team and former Dallas Cowboy and Air Force veteran Chad Hennings.
About 420 service members fly home from the war zone on R&R leave every day, according to information from the Army. Two chartered commercial planes fly troops and Defense Department civilians from Kuwait International Airport to two U.S. hubs, Atlanta and Dallas.
