DMN Blog: Ranking Romo
Ranking Romo
Tony Romo is trying to get a new contract before the season and I don't have much to do, so I've been pondering where Romo ranks among active QBs. I approached this from a viewpoint of guys I'd want to build a franchise around, so geezers like Brett Favre aren't factors.
There are six QBs who I'd clearly rather have than Romo: Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, Vince Young, Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers.
That puts Romo in the second tier, but I reckon I get real wishy-washy at this point. Not sure whether I'd take him over these young bucks with a bunch of potential: Jay Cutler, Matt Leinart, Alex Smith, Jason Campbell, Eli Manning and JaMarcus Russell.
The thing that's real clear is that the Cowboys were extremely lucky to get Romo as an undrafted free agent. Ten of the 12 other QBs I listed were first-round picks, including five guys that went first overall. Brees was the first pick of the second round, and Brady might be the best sixth-round pick ever.
The fact that Brady is the only other QB in the conversation that wasn't a high pick is significant. Brady and Romo both replaced Drew Bledsoe, too, leading me to an obvious conclusion: You can count on Romo leading the Cowboys to at least three Super Bowl titles.
Feel free to debate where Romo ranks among potential franchise QBs, but my conclusion is foolproof.
