OG Marco Rivera, hailed as a key free-agent acquisition three years ago when he joined the Cowboys, was released because of a bad back. Rivera had surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back each of the past two seasons and it robbed him of the power and explosion that once made him one of the game's finest guards. He delivered nothing more than average performances in each of his two years with the Cowboys, in part, because of the issues with his back. He has nerve damage and would have retired at some point, if the Cowboys had not released him. Rivera's biggest contribution may have come in his first season, when he aided C Andre Gurode with the line calls as the center adapted to the position from guard. ...

Disgruntled DE Greg Ellis said he wants the Cowboys to trade him or cut him if they don't give him a new contract. Owner Jerry Jones said he's not interested in giving Ellis, who will make $2.5 million this season, a new deal. Ellis said Jones has refused to meet with him regarding a new contract.

SCOUTING REPORT: CB Anthony Henry played with a bad knee in the second half of last season that probably should have kept him on the bench. When he's not hurt, Henry is a quality cornerback, who excels in bump-and-run coverage. He's a big, physical player who does a good job against the run and uses his long arms to deflect passes. He can be beaten on double moves and will draw some interference and holding penalties because he plays such a physical style, but he's still a good player. He'll continue to start, although the Cowboys flirted with the idea of moving him to safety.

REHAB UPDATE: LT Flozell Adams missed the club's final minicamp because he's had some swelling on his knee. The Cowboys don't think it's anything serious but they don't want to take any chances with Adams, who is supposed to anchor the offensive line. DE Greg Ellis is recovering from a ruptured Achilles' tendon he suffered last season and the Cowboys expect him to be ready for the start of training camp. Ellis, though, said he won't take the field until he is 100 percent. LB Akin Ayodele will miss the minicamp after having his knee scoped, but he should be fine for the start of training camp.
