DeMarcus Ware - a Star!

Will be in Soup Commercials
By Kristi Scales

Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware is the first Dallas Cowboy to be featured in Campbell's Chunky Soup commercials. He is one of eight players starring with their mothers in the soup brand's 2007-08 "Mama's Boys" campaign which will debut in TV and print advertisements during the NFL's opening weekend on Sept. 6.

"There's been a long history of Campbell's getting the players involved," Ware says. "Donovan McNabb was the first who got parents involved in the ads.

He's been part of their commercials for the past six years or so, but he didn't do it this year.

"My marketing guy called to tell me about the opportunity and I was really surprised. At first I was an alternate, but then one of the guys dropped out. I was next in line and I'm glad about the whole thing because now we have a Dallas Cowboy in it."

Ware will appear in the ads alongside San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson, Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, Ravens tight end Todd Heap, Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma, and Bears return specialist Devin Hester.

But the true "stars" of the ads are the players' real-life moms, including Ware's mother, Brenda.

"I called my mother and she was ecstatic," Ware recalls. "She was like 'Oh, I watch those commercials!' Now she's going to be on them. She lives back home in Auburn, Ala. At first when you meet her, she's kind of quiet. But once she gets to know you, she's really outgoing. The rest of the family can't wait to see the commercials. Now that she's back home, she's done some interviews with local media. She's a local celebrity now."

Ware went to Canada to film the commercials the weekend before the NFL draft.

"We had a great time in Toronto," Ware says. "We filmed inside a big warehouse/ soundstage. There was a fake house. It's supposed to be LaDainian's house. We also had outdoor scenes in snow and rain. The rain was real, but the snow was fake.

"The premise is that all of us guys are playing backyard ball and our parents are calling us inside to eat Campbell's soup when it's cold and rainy outside. Or another is when you come inside to eat your Campbell's soup but you're all muddy and messy. We're adult players, but we're playing the kids.

"It was awesome to see how our moms reacted to the spotlight."

Once the commercials begin airing nationally during the regular season, Ware expects to get some razzing from his teammates. "I'm sure they'll be putting Chunky Soup in my locker!" he says with a laugh.
