This is great news: Cowboys beat writer Calvin Watkins thinks Terrell Owens will know all the plays this season. If you missed it, way back in March, Dallas Morning News' Jean-Jacques Taylor mentioned that T.O. wasn't completely familiar with the playbook during his first year in Dallas. And it wasn't exactly a secret within the organization. But according to Watkins, that's all water under the bridge, folks:
Multiple times during the [2006] season, players told Owens the plays in the huddle. Owens says he knew the plays but too many times he ran the wrong route, missed a block or was chastised by the coaches for a miscue. During minicamps, Owens got the bulk of the passes. Garrett and receivers coach Ray Sherman said Owens knows the playbook going into training camp. It seems Owens got a lot of reps in minicamps and organized team activities to familiarize him with the offense.
So yay for that -- one less thing Romo will have to worry about.
On one hand, T.O. wasting people's time by not learning the plays is kinda selfish. But you have to grudgingly admire a dude who can just show up and still be one of the best wideouts in the league. I know, that doesn't change the fact that he's a monumental pain in the ass, and it's worth wondering how much better he could've been if he knew his responsibilities before leaving the huddle. But it's all relative, I guess.
Yeah, Owens can be divisive, but at this point, if you don't have a cache of weapons in your basement, aren't addicted to strip clubs, and don't engage in murdering dogs for jollies, you're a model citizen. So in that sense, T.O. could be up for Tank Johnson's Man of the Year award. Especially if he learns all the plays.
