Bobbie Brewskie: Cowboys vs. Colts

for starters let me just say that a nice 23-10 victory over last years Superbowl champs is always nice, preseason or not.

offense
as a whole the offense looked pretty good, especially considering that Free and McQistant were manning the two tackle spots. i really liked the fact that even with that we didnt give up a sack until the Matt Moore went down near the end of the game, of course the colts were missing a starting DE and DT. i liked the mix of pass and run, also liked what was called in certain situations.

Jason Garrett - given that he is completely unproven and the biggest part of this offense, i will start with him. i liked what he threw at us, especially that run on 3rd and 1, the delay to Barber for 10 yards was great. opening the game up to TO was also a great choice and i didnt see the conservativeness we had with Parcells. also did what he said "got the TEs (Witten) downfield."

Tony Romo - his #s speak for themselves. 10/11 for 93 yards in the first preseason game, that looks good to me. he seemed in sync with all of his WRs (TO INCLUDED!!!). got a bit nervous at the amount of times he was hit . . . atleast he wasnt sacked?!?!? i guess . . .

Brad Johnson - that throw to Fasano that would have made him 4/4 was pretty nice. he looked solid, completed 3/4 which made me happy.

Matt Moore - a surprise or what? he had a really good game, made things happen with his feet 2 or 3 times; checked down to his #2 option (the one where he hit Tony Curtis for about 15 yards, awesome!). seems like him and Curtis have a nice rhythm and he might be a big reason why Curtis gets the #3 TE spot. i really liked what i saw out of him.

Julius Jones - seems like the stories about Parcells "holding him back" are somewhat true. the guy looked a lot more fluid out there and i was impressed with what i saw. im liking the way hes running. almost broke a big one early when he side stepped and was dragged down by an arm tackle.

Marion Barber III - looks as good as ever. him and Jones make me very happy to be a cowboys fan, we will have a solid running attack with the two of them. he just doesnt go down, not a DE or LB or DB could take him down alone. he dances a bit too much if you ask me, but if it helps him make guys miss, go for it.

Tyson Thompson - i liked that he took 2 drives with what looked like about 5 carries each and drove us down the field. him, matt moore and tony curtis looked real good out there together. he was a bit weak up the inside, especially when you take his 6'1 230 lb frame into consideration - id like to see him be a "more powerful" runner. he was really good to the outside and cut up the field nicely on the sweeps he got.

Jackie Battle - he looked alright, nothing amazing. a few nice 4-5 yard runs. i see him not making it over TT, simply because he doesnt add a dimension like TT does. he was ok though.

Doug Free - he forced DEs far outside a lot and protected romos backside pretty well. i think he has a lot of potential. i did see his man get to romo once or twice after he got the ball out (just a little bit scary).

Corey Proctor - at C he wasnt so pretty with those high snaps to Brad Johnson, but he didnt look too bad when it came to blocking.

Leonard Davis - solid in his first start. seemed to open up a few holes for the RBs and was getting to the 2nd level. im liking him a lot at OG.

Andre Gurode - we paid him 4.5 million and even in the little time i saw of him, he played pretty well. i didnt really watch him much, i was focused much more on Free and McQ (Free especially), but i caught a play or two on him.

Pat Mcquistant - given that this was his first start, he played pretty well. never saw a DE get past him with ease and he was pretty good vs. the run as well.

Terrell Owens - dont really need a report on a guy who is the best when he is "on". the guys first catch says it all, "HE IS GONNA GET THE BALL!!!!"

Patrick Crayton - didnt hear his name as much as i wanted to, but he was out there running good routes and he made a catch or two. ive seen him, im happy with him.

Sam Hurd - he was out there just like Crayton. ive seen him as well. he looks really good along the sideline however, given that his only catches came along the sidelines.

Jerheme Urbane - he was thrown to in traffic quite a bit, he isnt scared of contact which is nice (we dont need any pinkstons on this team). i want to see more of him. at PR he didnt really get any opportunities, i want to see more of him there as well. not much to say about him here. he atleast was targeted and fielded the ball nicely on punts.

Defense

Wade Phillips - can i just say that i saw a 4-5 man rush on 99% of the plays that we ran. not to mention, Ware was being blitzed constantly. great job for the first game against a QB who gets the ball out in .5 seconds and a decent OL. im stoked to see the rest of this defense.

Demarcus Ware - pretty or what? he was stopped a few times, but by a LT who outweights him by about 60 lbs. he still got to the QB, hell he even hit Manning right as he threw to force and incompletion.

Bradie James - he was in the backfield just as often as last year, if not more. he seemed a lot faster as well, sideline to sideline and in his drop. i see a big year out of him, with no drop off vs. the run and a much better cover LB.

Akin Ayodele - didnt really see him all to much, i was much more stuck on our OLBs and didnt notice him do anything huge. not a bad thing however.

Anthony Spencer - seems to have the OLB spot under control. he got after the QB a bit and made a nice stop on Addaii twice. he is a quick learner it seems, almost no drop off from college DE to NFL OLB.

Bobby Carpenter - a menace vs. the run. i saw him make a few nice plays, left and right vs. the run, it was really nice to know that Carpenter can stuff the run as good as any LB on our team (he is 2nd behind James if you ask me). him and spencer will be a deadly combo.

Junior Glymph - HELLO!! BOOMSHAKLAKA! this guy is a monster. i am stoked that he is wares backup. he was all over the field, really proving that he deserves a roster spot. he is huge and fast, im lovin this kid.

Defensive Line - as a whole they looked pretty good, nothing that stood out. the guys are all looking better than last year though and they all look a lot quicker (even ferguson). i noticed canty and spears were doing a lot of stunts (THANK YOU PHILLIPS!) and this seemed to work nicely (especially with Glymph). Remi Ayodele was generating some pressure as well, i still dont see him making the team though. this defense defintely makes it easier for the DL to generate pressure and penetrate.

Terence Newman - need i write anything here? i saw him once or twice whne thrown too. he made a nice play in the flat and thats all i remember of him.

Anthony Henry - still doubting him? i think he looked damned good vs. Reggie Wayne, shut him down on multiple occasions and stopped a TD pass.

Aaron Glenn - looks good on all WRs, whether its a slot WR or a #1. the guy is 35 and still looks 25. same boat as newman tonight.

Joey Thomas - he was thrown to 3 or 4 times, i got to see a bit of him. he made quite a few nice plays: breaking up some passes, delivering some big hits and staying with some pretty good WRs. this might be our #4 CB.

Jacquez Reeves - get off our team! on kick off coverage i saw you running backwards, enough said.

Keith Davis - nice INT for 6. that made me happy. and people say he isnt good. i think he is a great backup SS. shouldnt start at FS, but is a damn good backup SS.

Abram Elam - nice big hits, i hope he makes the roster . . . or atleast PS. this guys is definitely worthy of a spot on this team, i was getting really excited when he was laying the wood. made some good plays.

Watkins/Hamlin - didnt see either of you . . .

Kickers - did anything go wrong? great game for both. its gonna be hard letting 1 go (likely to be Gramatica, because of Folks potential). kickoffs went into the endzone everytime and we made every FG/PAT. awesome.

The Team
as a whole they looked pretty good. the offense was crips, only 4 incompletions all game (2 by the #3 QB). big runs everywhere 10+ yards a bunch of times. limited amount of penalties. offense was "NSYNC." Defenese was different, i saw a bunch of stunts with the OLB going in and the DE out . . . i loved how we always had 4+ guys after the QB. DBs looked really good. im excited about our team.
