Cowboys' Newman unsure whether he'll play Sunday

IRVING – Terence Newman doesn't know when he'll return to the field.

Cowboys trainers and coach Wade Phillips want the starting cornerback to be patient as he deals with discomfort in his partially torn right plantar fascia.

Newman's status for Sunday's contest against the Miami Dolphins will be a game-time decision.

"It's probably going to be that way for a while," Newman said after Friday's practice. "We don't know how it's going to feel from week-to-week, day-to-day. I'll warm up before the game to see how it feels. If it feels good enough, I'll go."

Newman decided he couldn't play in last week's season opener against the New York Giants after experiencing pain during warmups.

To get ready for the Dolphins, Newman will take four pairs of cleats to see which feels best with his tape job. He will cut, move forward and backward and possibly cover a receiver in warmups to test the foot. Taking pain medication to numb the foot is another possibility, but Newman seems reluctant to do that.

"Sort of, because of some of the information they told me," said Newman, referring to his discussions with the training staff. "If I do it, the fact that it's numb when I play in a game, and the next day or next week or next month, it could get worse. It's still a possibility."

Newman has been limited in practice the last three days and is listed as questionable on the injury report.

Jacques Reeves would start in Newman's place in the base defensive package with Nate Jones coming in in passing situations.

Wide receivers numbers: With Terry Glenn out for a few weeks as he recovers from right knee surgery, the Cowboys will have five wide receivers on the active roster. Four dressed in the season opener, with rookie Isaiah Stanback inactive.

Stanback said he will travel to Miami, but it is unclear whether he'll dress.

Coaches meet again: Phillips and Dolphins coach Cam Cameron were on the same staff in San Diego for several years. Cameron was the offensive coordinator from 2002-06 and Phillips was defensive coordinator from 2004-06.
Practice time for both was tough.

"You knew if you didn't come with a good plan in practice that they were going to put it to you pretty good," Cameron said. "Now, it's for real. It's not practice anymore."

Briefly: OLB Greg Ellis (heel) will not play against the Dolphins but ILB Kevin Burnett (ankle) will. ... QB Tony Romo and Tennessee RB Chris Brown were named FedEx Air & Ground NFL players of the week.
