Cowboys QBs Coach Responds To Suspension
from ESPN - Hashmarks by Matt Mosley
Like most of you, I was pretty taken back when Cowboys quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson's name showed up in a report about Patriots safety Rodney Harrison being suspended for four games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.
According to the New York Daily News, Wilson had admitted to taking human growth hormone while he was the Bears' quarterbacks coach from 2004-06. Earlier today, the NFL announced that Wilson would be suspended for the first five games this season.
Not much shocks me anymore in this league, but a quarterbacks coach on HGH still does the trick. When I reached Wilson by cellphone earlier this afternoon, he said he took the substance, which he refused to identify, in an effort to improve his quality of life.
Wilson has suffered from diabetes for the past 24 years, and he claims that he didn't have a clue that the substance was banned by the league.
"I have no regrets on trying to improve my quality of life," he told me.
When I asked him the obvious but uncomfortable question of whether he was obtaining this substance for anyone else, he said, "The idea that I was trying to get this for anyone else is absolutely ludicrous."
He did say he regretted embarrassing the Cowboys organization in any way. In the past, Wilson has told me how closely he monitors his diet, and he still works out religiously. He's pretty ripped for a guy who hasn't played football in nearly a decade, and perhaps we now know why.
I think it's notable that Harrison didn't take any questions after his statement last night. Wilson made a statement and later answered questions from local reporters.
I'm not saying that makes Harrison's offense worse than Wilson's, but I thought it was worth mentioning. I'll keep you posted as this story continues to develop.
But now I'm off to cover today's most important college football game, Baylor-TCU, at Amon Carter Stadium. Let's talk soon.
