DMN Blog: Football 101- Blame the secondary
Wade Phillips wanted to make sure local media types understood something about that fancy 3-4 scheme of his. The differences between this scheme and other 3-4 schemes are all in how the front seven is used. The coverages are pretty much the same.
"We play the front different," Phillips said. "That's why we call it different because we don't play a two-gap. The front is different, the front seven. It doesn't really have anything to do with the coverages."
In other words, the secondary has no excuse for busting assignments and being sloppy while getting lit up by the Giants.
"If they only send three [receivers] out, which they did a lot of times and blocked with eight people, then we've got to get on those guys," Phillips said. "Even when we're playing zone, we've got to get on them tighter in the shorter coverages so they can't check it down and do those things and then have people over the top. If you have six or seven guys back and they only have three out, you need to match up better with them in zone."
Phillips didn't call out any particular players. However, since Jacques Reeves got a game ball, it's a safe bet that the coach wasn't pleased with the performances of Roy Williams, Ken Hamlin and Anthony Henry.
